Weller, Wheated Bourbon and the History Behind Pappy Van Winkle
Weller, Stitzel-Weller and Pappy Van Winkle are not separate bourbon stories. They are connected chapters in the same wheated bourbon lineage — a style that helped define some of the most desirable American whiskey ever bottled.
The short version: W.L. Weller helped establish the softer wheated bourbon style; Julian “Pappy” Van Winkle built his career through W.L. Weller & Sons and Stitzel-Weller; and the Van Winkle family later carried that wheated tradition into Old Rip Van Winkle and Pappy Van Winkle.
Why wheated bourbon matters
Most classic bourbon uses corn as the main grain, with rye as the secondary flavouring grain. Wheated bourbon changes that formula by using wheat instead of rye. The result is usually softer, rounder and more approachable, with less peppery spice and more emphasis on sweetness, texture and long ageing potential.
This is why Weller, Old Fitzgerald, Old Rip Van Winkle and Pappy Van Winkle remain so closely linked in the minds of bourbon lovers. They are part of the same historical conversation about wheat, maturity and Kentucky distilling heritage.
William Larue Weller and the original wheated bourbon idea
The Weller story begins with William Larue Weller, a Kentucky whiskey merchant and distiller born in 1825. In 1849, he founded what became W.L. Weller & Sons, a Louisville whiskey business known for quality and trust.
Weller’s key contribution was his use of wheat in place of rye in bourbon mash bills. This created a gentler, smoother style of bourbon that stood apart from sharper rye-influenced bourbons of the time. Today, Buffalo Trace describes W.L. Weller as The Original Wheated Bourbon, and the modern Weller range continues to honour that style.
That historical choice matters because wheated bourbon does not only taste different. It can also age with a different kind of grace. Wheat can allow bourbon to develop depth and sweetness over time without becoming overly aggressive, which is one reason long-aged wheated bourbons became so important to collectors.
How Stitzel-Weller connected Weller to Pappy Van Winkle
The bridge between Weller and Pappy Van Winkle is Julian P. “Pappy” Van Winkle Sr. Pappy began his whiskey career in 1893 as a salesman for W.L. Weller & Sons. He later bought the Weller wholesale house with Alex Farnsley, and the business acquired the A. Ph. Stitzel Distillery, which had supplied bourbon for Weller.
The two companies were merged into the legendary Stitzel-Weller Distillery. The distillery opened in 1935 in Shively, Kentucky, shortly after Prohibition. Its famous brands included W.L. Weller, Old Fitzgerald, Rebel Yell and Cabin Still. Pappy Van Winkle’s influence helped define the distillery’s reputation for high-quality wheated bourbon.
This is why Weller and Pappy are historically inseparable. Pappy Van Winkle did not appear from nowhere as a modern luxury label. The Van Winkle story grew directly out of the Weller business, the Stitzel distillery and the wheated bourbon tradition that Stitzel-Weller helped make famous.
Why Pappy Van Winkle exists because of this history
After the Van Winkle family sold Stitzel-Weller in 1972, Julian Van Winkle Jr. kept the rights to the Old Rip Van Winkle label. He used whiskey stocks from the old distillery to continue the family’s bourbon legacy. Julian Van Winkle III later took over, and the Van Winkle name became one of the most sought-after in American whiskey.
Today, Van Winkle whiskey is produced in partnership with Buffalo Trace Distillery under strict family guidelines. But the DNA remains the same: long-aged wheated bourbon, built on the Weller and Stitzel-Weller heritage.
That is why collectors often view Weller and Pappy as part of one historical family. Weller represents the wheated bourbon idea. Stitzel-Weller represents the distillery that made the style legendary. Pappy Van Winkle represents the family legacy that carried that tradition forward.
