Van Winkle Special Reserve 12 Year, commonly known as Lot B, sits in the softer, mature middle of the Van Winkle family range. Buffalo Trace presents it as a 12-year wheated bourbon that balances maturity and smoothness, giving collectors a famous label with a polished rather than aggressive profile.
From the Producer
The Van Winkle brands trace back to Julian "Pappy" Van Winkle, who began at the Stitzel-Weller distillery and whose family retained the pre-Prohibition Old Rip Van Winkle brand name after Stitzel-Weller was sold in 1972. Since 2002, the Van Winkle range, including this Special Reserve 12 Year Lot B, has been distilled and bottled by the Sazerac Company at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, as a joint venture with the Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery company. Like all Van Winkle bourbons, it uses wheat instead of rye as the secondary grain along with malted barley, giving it the softer, rounder wheated-bourbon character the family is known for.
