Van Winkle Special Reserve Lot B carries the name of Julian "Pappy" Van Winkle Sr., who co-owned the Stitzel-Weller Distillery before the brand rights passed to the pre-Prohibition Old Rip Van Winkle name held by his descendants. Since 2002 the Van Winkle straight bourbons have been distilled and bottled under family oversight by the Sazerac Company at the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, using the wheated mash bill (wheat and barley malt in place of rye) that defines the family's whiskey. Lot B is bottled at 12 years, positioned as the more accessible sibling to the longer-aged Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve expressions.
