W.L. Weller traces to William Larue Weller, born in 1825, who founded W.L. Weller & Brothers in 1849 and pioneered swapping rye for wheat as the bourbon's secondary grain to create a softer, smoother style. The brand is produced today at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. Weller 12 Year is described by the distillery as aged significantly longer than most wheated bourbons, giving it a deep bronze hue and a more refined, balanced character than the brand's younger expressions.
