Old Rip Van Winkle is the entry point of the Van Winkle family of bourbons, distilled and bottled by the Sazerac Company at its Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, as a joint venture with the Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery company founded by the Van Winkle family. Like the flagship Pappy Van Winkle range, Old Rip Van Winkle uses wheat rather than rye as its secondary grain, along with malted barley, giving the whiskey its softer, rounder character. It is aged for a shorter period and at a lower price point than the flagship Pappy bottlings, though it shares the same wheated recipe and family lineage.
