The Van Winkle family has been in bourbon since Julian P. Van Winkle Sr. took over the Stitzel-Weller distillery in Louisville, and two generations on Julian III and Preston still select the barrels that carry the name. Since 2002 the whiskey has been distilled and matured at Buffalo Trace in Frankfort under a joint venture with the family, using a wheated mash bill that replaces rye with wheat. Lot 'B' is the 12-year Special Reserve, bottled at 90.4 proof.
