W.L. Weller Special Reserve is the entry to Buffalo Trace's Weller range: a wheated Kentucky straight bourbon at 90 proof, sold as "The Original Wheated Bourbon". It is soft and sweet, and easy to enjoy neat or mixed.
About This Bourbon
Special Reserve is bottled at 45% ABV (90 proof) with no age statement and a burnt-orange colour. It has won many competition medals, including a gold for Special Reserve at the 2021 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. It is an everyday bourbon that shows the Weller style without much oak.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Sweet, with caramel to the fore.
- Palate: Honey, butterscotch and a soft woodiness; smooth, delicate and calm.
- Finish: Smooth and sweet, with a light honeysuckle note.
Serving & Food
Pour it over ice in a rocks glass, or stir it into an Old Fashioned with a sugar cube and Angostura. Neat, it is best at room temperature. Good with Hainanese chicken rice, glazed ribs or a slice of apple pie.

About the Distillery
Weller is made at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. Distilling on this site goes back to 1775, and Buffalo Trace makes a long list of bourbons there, including Eagle Rare, E.H. Taylor, Jr., the Antique Collection and the Van Winkle range.
Weller is the wheated side of that output. Most of Buffalo Trace's bourbons use rye as the second grain, and Weller stands apart by using wheat. The range now runs from Special Reserve up to the barrel-proof William Larue Weller.
