The Van Winkle name traces to Julian "Pappy" Van Winkle Sr., who joined W.L. Weller & Sons in 1893 and later co-owned the Stitzel-Weller Distillery. After Stitzel-Weller was sold in 1972, the Van Winkle family kept the rights only to the pre-Prohibition Old Rip Van Winkle name, and Julian Van Winkle III (Pappy's grandson) now runs the Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery company. Since 2002, all Van Winkle straight bourbons, including Special Reserve Lot B, have been distilled and bottled by the Sazerac Company at the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, on the wheated mash bill that replaces rye with wheat and adds barley malt. Lot B is the family's 12-year straight bourbon, distinct from the longer-aged Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve line.
