The Weller name traces to William Larue Weller (1825–1899), a Kentucky distiller credited as one of the first to swap rye for wheat as bourbon's secondary grain, starting in 1849 — the wheated mashbill that still defines the brand. W.L. Weller has been owned by the Sazerac Company since 1999 and is produced at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. Weller Centennial was a 10-year-old, 100-proof expression in the range and was discontinued in 2009, making surviving bottles a fixed, non-reissued release rather than an ongoing annual line.
