The Van Winkle name goes back to Julian P. Van Winkle Sr., who ran the Stitzel-Weller distillery in Louisville, and the family has kept the brand in production for four generations. Since 2002 the whiskey has been distilled and aged at Buffalo Trace in Frankfort under a joint arrangement with the family, using a wheated mash bill in place of rye. Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year at 107 proof is the entry bottling in that lineup.
