The Macallan 72 Years Old in Lalique, The Genesis Decanter, was released in 2018 to mark the opening of the new Macallan distillery. Distilled in the 1940s and limited to 600 numbered decanters, it is presented in Lalique crystal inside a bespoke case.
About This Whisky
Lalique captured the distillery in crystal, with the horizon of the decanter rising and falling to reflect the roof line. Each decanter sits in a presentation case designed by Burgess Studio and handcrafted by Royal Warrant holding cabinet makers NEJ Stevenson, with a curved wooden roof and a footprint taken from the circular layout of the three new still houses. The whisky was distilled in the 1940s, during the optimistic post-war period, and bottled at 42% ABV. It is limited to 600 individually numbered decanters worldwide.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: A delicate peat starts, leading to a soft, aged oak smoke, with citrus lemons and green apples over vanilla pods, raisins and the smallest hint of ginger.
- Palate: Delicate peat smoke with soft vanilla and a surprising sweet oak smoke; gentle wood spice fades to a viscous coating of citrus fruits and subtle green apples.
- Finish: Medium and fruity, with a sweet oaky mouthfeel.
Serving & Food
Serve at room temperature in a small nosing glass, in very small measures, and add nothing. A whisky this old is best tasted slowly over an evening, with a glass of still water alongside and no food at all.

About the Distillery
In 2018 The Macallan opened a new distillery and visitor experience on its estate, designed by the architects Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners. The architecture is defined by a long, undulating roof line of clean lines and natural curves, and the stills are arranged in three circular still houses, keeping the Curiously Small Stills at the heart of production. The whole project brought together masters of whisky, architecture, construction and craftsmanship. The Macallan describes the project as marking a new beginning in its story, and the Genesis Decanter was made to celebrate it.
