The Macallan Red Collection 50 Years Old, one of the three ongoing age statements at the core of the Red Collection. It was matured for five decades in sherry seasoned casks and barrels and bottled at 45.1% ABV.
About This Whisky
The Macallan describes the 50 Years Old as a peerless single malt matured over five decades under the watchful eye of generations of whisky makers. New make from its small copper stills was laid down in hand-picked oak and left for fifty years; the wood shaped its natural colour, aromas and flavours. The oak presentation box is crafted by hand in the UK from the same sustainable European oak used for the casks, and upholstered in Scottish leather from Bridge of Weir.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Antique oak and soft leather, light floral notes, rich cocoa, black cherry and ginger.
- Palate: A warming combination of dried fruits and wood spices, moving into dates and dark chocolate, orange oil and hints of sultanas.
- Finish: Rich and complex with a slight effervescent feel, and a long finish of raisins, dates and crème brûlée.
Serving & Food
Serve at room temperature in a small crystal nosing glass, neat, with a glass of still water on the side. Pour small measures and let each rest before tasting. Dark chocolate with orange oil or a few dates will echo the palate.

About the Distillery
Red runs through The Macallan's history. The founder's surname, Reid, is a Scots form meaning the red. The distillery also traces the colour through its Choice Old range, released in 1903. The Red Collection gathers these threads. Its core is a 40, a 50 and a 60 Years Old, which The Macallan calls the oldest ongoing expressions it has offered, joined from time to time by very old guest releases such as the 71, 74 and 78 Years Old.
