About This Whisky
Silver Seal bottled a small series of 1977 Macallan at 33 years old in 2010, filling a range of antique decanters one at a time. Bonhams has sold examples in French Baccarat crystal dating from the 1930s, alongside American Brilliant Period pieces. This one is the Baccarat Rhone shape in 750mL. Each decanter was filled and sealed individually.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Dried fig and orange zest, then old oak, baking spice and sherried malt.
- Palate: Full and mature, with raisin, cocoa and polished wood, carried by Speyside weight.
- Finish: Elegant and lasting, with spice, dried fruit and a gently drying oak close.
Serving & Food
Pour it neat into a copita. Add water only a drop at a time, if at all. It is lovely with roast pigeon, a wedge of Parmigiano, or candied orange dipped in chocolate.

About the Distillery
The 1977 spirit came from a distillery in the middle of growth. The Macallan has explained that its older whiskies were made at a time when it was planning for the future, adding to the number of its Curiously Small Stills rather than building bigger ones. That kept the new make heavy, rich and fruity even as output rose. Whisky from this decade therefore carries the full-bodied house character into great age.
