A Macallan Anniversary Malt 25 Year Old without a vintage on the label. The Anniversary Malt was the distillery's sherry-matured 25 year old from 1983 until 2004, and it remains a sought-out part of any older Macallan collection.

About This Whisky

The Anniversary Malt was The Macallan's 25 year old, first released in 1983 and produced for about two decades until it was replaced in 2004. Most editions named a distillation year, but some were issued without one, like this bottle. All were matured in sherry casks and bottled at 43% ABV, with the cream and gold label and a large red 25 at its centre. Until 2002 the bottles came in a wooden presentation box; the final years switched to a red box. This is the 750mL size.

Tasting Profile

• Nose: Dried fruit and orange peel, old sherry, polished oak, a little chocolate and warm spice.
• Palate: Rich and mature, with raisin, fruit cake, toffee and cinnamon over a firm backbone of European oak.
• Finish: Very long, drying slowly on dried fruit, spice and old wood.

Serving & Food

Pour at room temperature into a nosing glass and take it slowly. A few drops of water can lift the fruit if the oak feels firm. Good companions are a fig and walnut tart, grilled lamb cutlets or a slab of dark chocolate.

About the Distillery

The Macallan puts cask seasoning at the centre of how it makes whisky. The distillery's hand-picked casks are made from oak sourced, crafted, toasted and seasoned under the eye of a Master of Wood. They are filled with sherry and seasoned for 18 months in Spain before they travel to Scotland. Only then are they filled with The Macallan's new make spirit, and the spirit stays in the same cask for as many years as its destined expression needs. The Macallan credits the oak with the largest share of each whisky's colour, aroma and flavour.
