The Anniversary Malt was Macallan's vintage-dated 25 year old, released in sequence from the early 1980s onward and presented in a wooden case with the vintage and bottling year stated. Each release was drawn from casks laid down in a single named year, so the 1971 bottled in 1997 is a self-contained vintage rather than part of a continuous run. Macallan's house style in that era came from sherry-seasoned Spanish and European oak, which is what gives these older Anniversary bottlings their dried-fruit and polished-oak weight.
