The Macallan distillery was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid at Easter Elchies on the banks of the River Spey in Speyside, Scotland, and has been part of the Edrington Group since 1999. The Macallan’s sherry-cask identity was cemented during the 1980s and 1990s when the distillery sourced fully seasoned sherry-oak casks from bodegas in Jerez, Spain. The Sherry Oak 18 Year Old sits at the centre of that classic range, bottled at 43% ABV in the older 750mL format before the distillery adopted the 700mL European standard.
Tasting Notes
Appearance — deep amber with copper and mahogany hues, the colour of long sherry-oak contact.
Nose — raisin, orange peel, mature oak, ginger, chocolate and polished sherry.
Palate — full and mature, with dried fruit, spice, toffee, oak and classic Speyside sherry depth.
Finish — long and warming, with fruit cake, cocoa and oak spice.
