About This Whisky
Before 2004 the 18 Year Old was released as a series of vintages, so each year's bottling reflected a single distillation year and its casks. Spirit for this one ran off the stills in 1974 and spent 18 years in sherry oak from Jerez before bottling in 1992. Older Macallan of this era was filled into casks that had held sherry, and it tends to show more old-wood depth and less overt sweetness than today's releases. It was bottled at 43% in the 750mL size used for markets such as the United States.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Raisin and orange peel, then dark chocolate, cinnamon and a waxy, old-oak note.
- Palate: Rich and mature, with fruit cake, toffee, malt and firm European oak spice.
- Finish: Long and warming, fading on dried fruit, cocoa and seasoned wood.
Serving & Food
Serve at room temperature in a nosing glass and allow it time after opening, since old bottles often need air. Try it neat before deciding on water. It suits roast duck with plum sauce, aged Comté, or a plate of candied walnuts.

About the Distillery
The name itself is older than the distillery. The Macallan explains that the land was once known as Maghellan, from the Gaelic magh, meaning fertile ground, and Ellan, after St Fillan, a monk linked to the church that stood on the estate until around 1400. When Alexander Reid began distilling there in 1824, he was working ground that had been farmed and settled for centuries. The estate still sits on a rise above the River Spey near Craigellachie, and it remains the home of the distillery, its warehouses and Easter Elchies House.
