The Macallan has been distilling at Easter Elchies House above the River Spey since Alexander Reid took a licence in 1824, and the distillery built its name on sherry-seasoned oak sourced from Jerez. The Gran Reserva line appeared in the 1990s and was positioned specifically as the fully sherry-matured, vintage-dated expression at a time when much of the market was moving toward lighter wood. A 1979 vintage bottled in 1997 at 18 years old sits squarely in the period collectors point to when they talk about the old sherried Macallan style.
