Macallan 18 Year Gran Reserva 1979 700mL (Estate Release) is a sherry-cask Speyside single malt distilled at The Macallan in 1979 and bottled after 18 years of maturation, presented in the distillery’s estate-release Gran Reserva format. Gran Reserva was the distillery’s premium tier for particularly fine sherry-cask whisky.
From the Producer
The Macallan distillery was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid at Easter Elchies on the banks of the River Spey in Speyside, Scotland, and has been part of the Edrington Group since 1999. From the early 1980s onward The Macallan became known for sherry-seasoned oak maturation, with casks sourced from bodegas in Jerez, Spain. The Gran Reserva series was positioned as the distillery’s reserve-tier sherry-cask bottling, drawn from selected casks after long maturation.
Tasting Notes
Appearance — deep amber with copper highlights, typical of long sherry-oak maturation.
Nose — dried fruits, raisin, orange peel, dark chocolate and polished sherry oak.
Palate — full-bodied and richly sherried, with fruitcake, treacle, warming spice and mature oak depth.
Finish — long and warming, with lingering dried fruit, cocoa and sweet oak.
Best For
Macallan collectors, special-occasion pours and comparative tastings focused on older sherry-led Speyside releases.
