The Macallan distillery was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid at Easter Elchies, Craigellachie, in Speyside on the River Spey. Originally a farm distillery, it built its reputation from the 1930s onward on extended cask ageing, traditionally in oak sherry casks shipped from Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, alongside bourbon casks in more recent ranges.
