Latour a Pomerol 2018 750mL

Château Latour à Pomerol is a small estate beside the village church of Pomerol, farmed and made by the Moueix house. In 2018 it was bottled as pure Merlot, giving a dark, dense and firmly structured wine from a ripe, sunny year.

About This Wine

For 2018 the blend was 100% Merlot. It was a generous, sunny vintage on the Right Bank, and the clay on the better parcels helped the vines keep their balance through the summer heat. Critics singled this out as one of the more concentrated and structured wines in the Moueix Pomerol range that year, with dark fruit and a firm tannic spine that still needs time to settle.

Tasting Profile

• Nose: Black plum, blackberry and dark chocolate, with coffee, clove and a fresh mint note.
• Palate: Full and dense. Ripe black and blue fruit, a hint of leather and tobacco, and firm tannin still knitting with the oak.
• Finish: Long, earthy and gently spiced.

Serving & Food

Opening up now with a two-hour decant, and should keep improving for another fifteen years or so. Serve at 16 to 17°C in a Bordeaux glass. Duck breast with cherry sauce, beef Wellington or a mushroom and chestnut pie are good matches.

About the Château

Despite the name, the property has no connection with Château Latour in Pauillac. Madame Loubat, then owner of Petrus, bought it in 1917, and it later passed to her niece, Madame Lacoste, who left it to a charitable foundation, the Foyers de Charité, in 2002. Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix has farmed the vineyard and made the wine for decades. The vineyard runs to about 7.9 hectares with two quite different kinds of ground: gravel and clay over iron-rich subsoil on the central blocks near the church, which give power and grip, and looser, sandier soils to the north and west that add softness. Plantings are around 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc.
