Laphroaig Distillery was established in 1815 on the southern shore of Islay, near Port Ellen, and is known for its heavily peated, coastal single malt style. The distillery was an early official bottler of single malt in Scotland and is today owned by Beam Suntory after a period as part of the Allied Domecq portfolio. Long-aged Laphroaig bottlings distilled in the 1970s have a reputation for combining the distillery's signature medicinal peat with layered sherry cask maturity, and 31 Year releases from this period are recognised as collector editions in the secondary whisky market.
