Lagavulin was licensed in 1816 on the south coast of Islay and is one of the island's core peated distilleries, now part of Diageo. The 12 Year Old is the distillery's regular contribution to Diageo's annual Special Releases, and unlike the widely available 16 Year Old it is drawn from refill American oak and bottled at cask strength without chill filtration. That combination is why the 12 shows a brighter, more mineral and more overtly coastal side of Lagavulin than the sherried, rounder standard bottling, and why each annual edition is treated as a separate collectible rather than a repeat.
