Krug Grande Cuvée 162ème Édition is the house's flagship multi-vintage Champagne built around the 2006 harvest. It blends 163 wines from 11 different years, with reserves reaching back to 1990.

About This Champagne

The 2006 harvest provides the core of this Édition, with reserve wines making up 40% of the blend. Among them is a generous 1990 Chardonnay from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, alongside many reserves from the first five years of the 2000s, chosen to bring freshness and vivacity against the round, ripe 2006 wines. The final mix is 44% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay and 21% Meunier.

Tasting Profile

• Nose: Citrus peel, hazelnut, brioche and baked apple, with a salty, mature edge.
• Palate: Upright and energetic on the palate despite the mature nose, layered with orchard fruit and reserve-wine depth.
• Finish: Delicate, pure and long, with a lingering saline tang.

Serving & Food

Serve between 9 and 12°C; colder than that mutes it. A white-wine glass shows the complexity better than a flute. Good with dim sum such as har gow and siu mai, fried soft-shell crab, or a plate of jamón.

About the Maison

In 1848, five years after founding his house, Joseph Krug wrote down his principles in a cherry-red notebook addressed to his young son Paul. His central point was that good Champagne needs good raw material and good sites, and that a wine which only looks good in one lucky year cannot be relied upon.

The notebook was later found in the company safe after Margareth Henriquez took charge of Krug in 2009, and its ideas became the basis for the way the house has explained itself since, including the yearly recreation of Grande Cuvée from a wide palette of plots and years.
