Krug 2006 turns a hot, erratic season into a round and enveloping Champagne that the Tasting Committee saw as capricious and generous in equal measure. It is the warmer, more embracing face of Krug, still kept in line by the house's usual precision.
About This Champagne
2006 swung between intense heat and dry spells broken by heavy rain. Krug made a round, generous wine from it, blending 45 per cent Pinot Noir with 35 per cent Chardonnay and 20 per cent Meunier. Julie Cavil describes it as charming and opulent, a Champagne that spreads warmth across the palate. After more than ten years in the Reims cellars it shows spice and pastry richness, lifted by enough acidity to keep it fresh.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Yellow and dried fruit, toasted almonds, hazelnut, maple syrup, meringue and mandarin liqueur.
- Palate: Generous, deep and ample yet fresh, with nougat, frangipane, pastry, tarte tatin and plenty of citrus.
- Finish: Persistent, closing on pink grapefruit skin.
Serving & Food
Pour at 10 to 12°C into a large tulip glass, where its aromas open steadily. It is in a lovely place now and will hold for years. Krug rates it with aromatic food, so try a tagine with preserved lemon, slow-roasted leg of lamb or duck breast.
How to Enjoy
A Krug for people who like their Champagne rich, spiced and generous rather than lean.

About the Maison
Krug's cellars and family house are in Reims, but in 2024 the house opened a new winery in Ambonnay, beside the Clos d'Ambonnay vineyard. Named Joseph after the founder, it took seven years to plan and build and was eco-designed from the start.
The winery brings all of Krug's vinification and blending work together under one roof, from the first fermentation of each plot's juice to the creation of new Éditions. For a house that keeps hundreds of plot wines apart every year, having that work in one purpose-built space is a practical change as much as a symbolic one.
