John Kongsgaard's family has farmed east of the town of Napa since the 1800s, and The Judge comes from a single block on that home property - named for his father, the judge. The winemaking is deliberately hands-off: native-yeast fermentation, no temperature control, long ageing on the lees in barrel, and bottling without filtration. Quantities are tiny even by Napa standards, and the wine is sold almost entirely through the estate's own list.
