Kilkerran is distilled at Glengyle, a Campbeltown distillery originally founded in 1872 by William Mitchell, whose family also owned neighbouring Springbank. Glengyle closed in 1925 and stood idle until J&A Mitchell's Mitchell's Glengyle Ltd rebuilt it, restarting production in 2004. The whisky is bottled as Kilkerran rather than Glengyle because the Glengyle name is owned by another distiller; the name Kilkerran instead references Ceann Loch Cille Chiarain, the old Gaelic name for Campbeltown. Kilkerran's Heavily Peated series is a limited batch-release line that pushes past the distillery's usual lightly peated core style.
