Kavalan distillery was completed in December 2005 by Taiwan's King Car Group in Yuanshan, Yilan County, and produced its first spirit in March 2006. It gained international attention in January 2010 when one of its whiskies beat several Scotch and English entries in a blind tasting held in Leith, Scotland, and its Solist range of single cask, cask-strength bottlings has since won multiple “World's Best Single Malt” and “World's Best Single Cask” titles at the World Whiskies Awards. Oloroso sherry cask maturation is one of the Solist series' signature styles, prized for the dense, dried-fruit-driven character Kavalan's warm Yilan climate draws out of the wood.
