Karuizawa Five Decades 1960-2000 is a rare multi-decade bottling from the closed Karuizawa distillery, created for collectors of mature Japanese whisky and scarce closed-distillery releases.
From the Producer
Five Decades is a vatting rather than a single cask: it draws Karuizawa whisky distilled across the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000, spanning the distillery's entire working life up to the year it shut down. Assembling it required stock from each of those decades to still exist at the time of bottling, which by then was almost nothing. Karuizawa distilled in Nagano from 1955 to 2000 and the site was demolished in 2016, so no comparable bottling can be made again. This is the 700mL release.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Dried fruit, incense, old oak, spice, dark chocolate and sherried malt richness.
- Palate: Powerful and mature, with layered dried fruit, oak, spice and closed-distillery depth.
- Finish: Long and contemplative, with wood spice, fruit and warming strength.
Best For
Closed-distillery Japanese whisky collections, trophy-bottle gifting and buyers who value rarity and presentation over everyday drinking.
