Karuizawa 34 Year 1980 Cask #6476 700mL is a 34-year-old Japanese single malt from the closed Karuizawa Distillery, distilled in 1980 and bottled in July 2014 from bourbon cask #6476, presented at 700mL.
From the Producer
Karuizawa Distillery was founded in 1955 at Miyota on the southern slopes of Mount Asama in Nagano Prefecture and was operated by Mercian Corporation. It was the smallest malt-whisky distillery in Japan and used small pot stills suited to low-volume, hands-on production, with a maturation programme that included both sherry and bourbon casks. The distillery was mothballed in 2000 and closed in 2011, and remaining stocks have been released in small, allocated single-cask bottlings such as this 34-year-old bourbon-cask expression from 1980.
Tasting Profile
Appearance — Bright amber, characteristic of long bourbon-cask maturation.
Nose — Powerful at first, then cut pine, summer fruits and coffee beans as recorded by specialist notes.
Taste — Floral notes, dried fruit, candied orange and Christmas spice.
Finish — Fresh oak, sweet citrus and juicy fruit into a long finish.
Best For
Collectors seeking a high-strength closed-distillery Karuizawa bourbon-cask release.
