From the Producer
Karuizawa Distillery was founded in 1955 at Miyota on the southern slopes of Mount Asama in Nagano Prefecture and was operated by Mercian Corporation. It was the smallest malt-whisky distillery in Japan and used small pot stills suited to low-volume, hands-on production, with a sherry-led maturation programme built around European oak. The distillery was mothballed in 2000 and closed in 2011. Tiger Label is among the recognisable series drawn from remaining Karuizawa stocks, releasing individual sherry-cask bottlings such as this 25-year-old expression from 1985.

Appearance — Deep amber to mahogany, characteristic of long sherry-butt maturation.
Nose — Dark dried fruit, sherry oak, lacquered wood, spice, cocoa and old malt.
Taste — Powerful and concentrated, with raisin, plum, chocolate, roasted nuts and firm cask-strength structure.
Finish — Long and intense, with lingering sherry spice, oak tannin and mature Japanese malt.
