Karuizawa 1984 Carpe Koi Cask #4021 700mL is a Japanese single malt whisky from the closed Karuizawa Distillery, distilled in 1984 and bottled in 2021 from a single first-fill sherry cask, presented at 700mL.
From the Producer
Karuizawa Distillery was founded in 1955 at Miyota on the southern slopes of Mount Asama in Nagano Prefecture and was operated by Mercian Corporation. It was the smallest malt-whisky distillery in Japan and used small pot stills suited to low-volume, hands-on production. The distillery's signature character was shaped by its high-altitude site, gold-enzyme fermentation and a sherry-led maturation programme built around European oak casks. Karuizawa was mothballed in 2000 and closed in 2011, after which remaining stocks have been released in small, allocated single-cask bottlings such as this Carpe Koi cask from 1984.

Nose — Dried fruit, dates, dark chocolate, old oak, spice and leather.
Taste — Intense and sherry-rich, with raisin, plum, cocoa, roasted nuts and cask-strength grip.
Finish — Long, deep and spicy, with lingering sherry wood and mature Japanese malt.
