Jayer-Gilles made a small amount of Grand Cru Échézeaux from the Échézeaux du Dessus lieu-dit, and it was the flagship of this Hautes-Côtes domaine. The 2009 was made by Gilles Jayer in a ripe, generous vintage and is now starting to open.

Échézeaux is a Grand Cru in the commune of Flagey-Échézeaux, between Clos de Vougeot and Grands-Échézeaux, and it is made up of several lieux-dits. Échézeaux du Dessus is one of the higher-rated parts. The domaine's parcel covers about 0.54 hectares and was once farmed by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. 2009 was a warm, sunny year that gave ripe, round wines, and the new-oak style of the time means a bottle like this rewards patience.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Dark cherry, raspberry, spice, a smoky touch of oak and developing earthy notes.
- Palate: Rich and broad, with ripe fruit, fine but firm tannin and fresh balancing acidity.
- Finish: Long, with spice, cocoa and mineral tension.
Serving & Food
Serve at 16 to 17°C in a Burgundy bowl after decanting for about two hours. Drinking window roughly now to 2035. Good with roast lamb with rosemary, venison fillet, or duck confit.

About the Domaine
Domaine Jayer-Gilles was founded in the 1950s by Robert Jayer and his wife Paulette at Magny-lès-Villers, in the hills between the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits and Hautes-Côtes de Beaune. Robert belonged to the Jayer family of Vosne-Romanée. The farm turned to vines in earnest in 1970, and their son Gilles, who joined in 1982, took over in 1998.
Gilles worked in a rich, deeply coloured style with long ageing in new oak, and the reds were known to need years in bottle. The domaine, around 11 hectares, was sold in 2017 to André Hoffmann and is now called Domaine Hoffmann-Jayer.
