Hampden Estate sits in Trelawny on Jamaica's north coast and has been making rum on the same site since 1753. It is the most extreme of the surviving Jamaican distilleries: wild fermentations that run for weeks in wooden vats with dunder and muck, then double-retort copper pot stills, producing rums with among the highest ester counts in the world. For most of its history Hampden sold that rum to blenders rather than bottling it - the estate only launched under its own name in 2018, after the Hussey family acquired the site in 2009. The house rule is no added sugar, colouring or flavouring.
