Hakushu Distillery was built in 1973 by House of Suntory in the forests at the foot of Mt. Kaikomagatake, at one of the highest elevations of any malt-whisky site in the world. Water for production is drawn from the surrounding mountains, and the air, forest botanicals and cooler climate shape the distillery’s herbal, minty and gently smoky house character. The 25 Year Old is built around long-aged malt whiskies drawn from the distillery’s reserves; the older Japan-version presentation adds further appeal for mature Japanese whisky collectors who want a domestic market bottling rather than a current export release.
