Hakushu 25 Year Old in a limited presentation made for Japan's airport duty-free shops and hospitality gifting. It is the oldest regular age statement from Suntory's forest distillery, bottled at 43% in a 700mL bottle.
About This Whisky
Suntory's blenders build Hakushu 25 from three strands of malt, each aged 25 years or more: creamy, woody malts, smoky peated malts and rich, fruity sherry cask malts. These are vatted and then left to marry slowly before bottling. The Japan Airport edition keeps the same whisky at 43% and comes in special packaging for the duty-free and gifting trade.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Plum, caramel and a cigar-box note, with soft wood smoke.
- Palate: Crème brûlée, sage and lavender with baked pineapple.
- Finish: Gently smoky and lasting, with hinoki cypress at the close.
Serving & Food
A whisky to taste slowly at room temperature, neat, from a fine tulip glass. Leave water aside at first. Serve with very little: a few roasted chestnuts, dark chocolate with sea salt or a sliver of aged Parmigiano.

About the Distillery
Hakushu lies in Hokuto, Yamanashi, about 120 kilometres west of Tokyo. Whisky of this age was distilled in the 1990s or earlier, when Japanese whisky sales were falling and part of the distillery had been shut down.
The distillery has been producing since 1973, so a 25-year-old Hakushu draws on some of the older stock Suntory has kept back through the lean years and the shortage that followed. Very little of it reaches the market each year.
