About This Whisky
The 12 is a vatting of Hakushu malts aged at least twelve years, including a share of lightly peated spirit, with American oak doing most of the work. Suntory does not publish the exact recipe. This 50mL miniature is the older presentation and carries the 12-year age statement at 43%.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Fresh basil, pine needles and green apple.
- Palate: Sweet pear and kiwi with mint and a crisp malty centre.
- Finish: Refreshing and gently smoky, with a green tea note.
Serving & Food
Serve slightly cool, around 16°C, in a small tulip glass, or make a tall highball with plenty of ice and a twist of lemon peel. Pairs well with sashimi of white fish, chicken karaage or a goat's cheese and herb tart.

About the Distillery
The story of this bottle is tied to the Japanese whisky shortage. Demand for highballs in Japan and for Japanese malt overseas rose sharply from the late 2000s, and domestic whisky shipments more than doubled between 2007 and 2017. Stocks laid down in the quiet years of the early 2000s could not keep up.
In May 2018 Suntory announced that Hakushu 12 would stop selling in Japan from June, alongside Hibiki 17, the first time it had halted a brand for lack of aged stock. It said it was adding stills at both Hakushu and Yamazaki and building more warehouse space. Hakushu 12 has since come back in limited amounts, but bottles from before the pause are now a closed set.
