The Corton-Charlemagne bottle in Glenmorangie's 2024 Pursuit of Passion set is a 28-year-old Highland malt finished in grand cru white Burgundy casks. It is the one white wine finish of the three, and it has drawn some of the warmest reviews of the collection.

About This Whisky

This whisky was distilled in 1995 and aged in ex-bourbon barrels until 2005, when it was refilled into casks from the Corton-Charlemagne grand cru, a hill of Chardonnay vines in the Côte de Beaune. It then rested there for almost two decades and was bottled at 52.1% ABV. Glenmorangie had not used Corton-Charlemagne casks before this release, which came out in a limited run of 600 sets.

Tasting Profile

  • Nose: Honeysuckle and jasmine, dried mango and peach, with lime marmalade and a chalky, vinous edge.
  • Palate: Thick and oily, with poached pear, grilled pineapple, almond praline and a little clove.
  • Finish: Long and bright, finishing on ripe stone fruit, lime and soft tannin.

Serving & Food

Pour it into a white-wine style tulip at around 18°C, and try it neat before adding a little cool water. It sits well beside lobster with beurre blanc, a roast chicken with morels, or a Comté aged for two years.

How to Enjoy

White Burgundy drinkers curious about whisky, and anyone assembling the full Pursuit of Passion trio.

About the Distillery

Some of Glenmorangie's wood experiments run for decades. The three whiskies in Pursuit of Passion were moved into wine casks in 2004 and 2005 and then left in the warehouses at Tain for close to twenty years, checked from time to time, before anyone decided they were ready.

The man behind them is Dr Bill Lumsden, who arrived in February 1995. He describes wine as his hobby and has often said it gives him ideas for new whiskies. Over the years he has bottled Glenmorangie finished in Meursault, Sassicaia and Sonoma-Cutrer casks,.
