Woodford Reserve Distiller's Select is the flagship bourbon from Woodford Reserve in Versailles, Kentucky, launched in 1996. It is a fairly high-rye bourbon, blended from pot-still and column-still whiskey.
About This Bourbon
The mash is 72% corn, 18% rye and 10% malted barley. Part of the whiskey is distilled in copper pot stills at the Versailles distillery, and the rest in column stills at Brown-Forman's plant in Shively, Louisville. The two are aged in new charred white oak barrels made at Brown-Forman's own cooperage, then batched together. Each bottle is marked with its batch and bottle number and filled at 90.4 proof, 45.2% ABV. The brand says the result carries more than 200 detectable flavour notes.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Rich dried fruit with hints of mint and orange, faint vanilla, tobacco spice and cocoa.
- Palate: Rich, chewy and rounded, with citrus, cinnamon, cocoa, toffee, caramel and chocolate.
- Finish: Silky smooth, with a long, warm tail.
Serving & Food
An all-rounder. Sip it neat in a rocks glass, or use it as the base for a Mint Julep, Old Fashioned or Kentucky Mule. At the table, try it with fried chicken, honey-glazed char siu or apple crumble.

About the Distillery
After the Pepper family era, the distillery was sold in 1878 to Leopold Labrot and James Graham, and ran as Labrot & Graham, apart from Prohibition, until Brown-Forman bought it in 1941. Brown-Forman closed it in the late 1960s and sold the land to a local farmer.
In 1993 the company bought the site back, restored the old stone buildings and fitted copper pot stills. Woodford Reserve bourbon came out in 1996, and the distillery took the Woodford Reserve name in 2004. Brown-Forman still owns it.
