Krug Grande Cuvée 173ème Édition is the most recent in Krug's numbered Grande Cuvée programme, continuing the house's multi-vintage blend tradition anchored on a single base harvest and supplemented by reserve wines from previous years.

From the Producer

Krug was founded in Reims in 1843 by Joseph Krug, a German-born cooper-turned-negociant who believed Champagne should not depend on the vintage alone. Today the house still follows his founding idea: every year, a Grande Cuvée blends more than 120 wines from many different years, kept in oak casks, to recreate a Krug 'taste' beyond any single harvest. Krug owns 268 hectares across the Champagne region — in Reims, the Côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims — and farms plots in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Avize, Oger, Cramant, Ambonnay, Aÿ and Trépail. The single-vineyard Clos du Mesnil (1.84 hectares, walled since 1698, 100% Chardonnay) and Clos d'Ambonnay (0.68 hectares, walled, Pinot Noir) are bottled separately only in years Krug judges the plot's harvest good enough. The Krug Collection is Krug's late-release programme: selected vintage wines returned to the cellars for extended ageing, re-disgorged and re-dosed closer to release than the standard library. The house ferments in small stainless-steel tanks, ages wines in 205-litre oak casks (Krug is one of the few houses still using wood for élevage), and bottles each plot and year separately before the blending.

Each edition of Krug Grande Cuvée is built around a base year and re-blended with reserves kept in oak casks in the house's cellars. The 173ème Édition extends the line, offering Krug's house style in a current numbered release.

Tasting Profile

  • Nose: Ripe citrus, orchard fruit, brioche, flowers and pastry spice.
  • Palate: Layered, generous and fresh, with reserve-wine depth and a fine mousse.
  • Finish: Long, savoury and toasty.

Best For

Krug drinkers wanting the most current Grande Cuvée edition, luxury gifting and restaurant service where the house's flagship non-vintage blend is the house pour.
