Karuizawa distillery was founded in 1955 by Mercian Corporation at Miyota, Nagano Prefecture, and was Japan's smallest whisky distillery until it was mothballed in 2000 and closed in 2011. Its remaining casks were bought up and released in a series of luxury bottlings, including vatted multi-vintage releases such as the Noh series, which are now among the rarest and most valuable whiskies in the world from a distillery that no longer produces spirit.
