Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the four Premier Cru Classé estates named in the 1855 Bordeaux classification and has been owned by the Rothschild family — through Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) — since Baron James de Rothschild acquired the property in 1868. The vineyard covers roughly 152 hectares on the gravelly rise above the Gironde in the northern Pauillac commune, planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The 1982 vintage on the Left Bank was a turning point for modern Bordeaux: a hot, dry summer produced exceptionally ripe, generous wines that have rewritten the prestige of the appellation. The 1.5L magnum format is widely considered the most age-worthy bottle size for serious cellaring, and château-produced OWCs are made for the in-bottle ageing period at the property and remain the only pack confirmed by the estate for that vintage.
