Distenta V Grenache is Sine Qua Non's 2023 Grenache-led red, blended from all four of the Krankls' estate vineyards. It comes from a long, cool season and is a fresher, more mineral Grenache than the 2022.
About This Wine
The blend is 81.8% Grenache, 8.6% Mourvèdre, 7.7% Syrah, with 1.3% Muscat and 0.6% Petit Manseng. The fruit came 42.2% from Cumulus, 28.2% from Eleven Confessions, 24.5% from The Third Twin and 5.1% from Molly Aida. About a quarter of the fruit, mostly Grenache, went in as whole clusters, and the wine spent 23 months in French oak, largely demi-muids, 57.8% new. Jeb Dunnuck scored it 99 points and Vinous 98.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Black raspberry, black cherry and strawberry, with lavender, blood orange, graphite and roasted herbs.
- Palate: Full-bodied and round, with juicy fruit, crushed-stone minerality and a spine of fine tannin.
- Finish: Long and peppery, with spice from the stems.
Serving & Food
Serve at 16 to 17°C in a large glass, after an hour in a decanter. It can be opened now and should improve over the next 10 to 15 years. Pairs well with roast duck, lamb tagine with apricots, or mushroom and chestnut pie.

About the Winery
Alongside the main label, the Krankls have taken on a few side projects. With the late Austrian winemaker Alois Kracher they made the Mr. K sweet wines, a programme that ended with the 2006 vintage after Kracher's death.
From 2010 Manfred Krankl has also made a Châteauneuf-du-Pape called Chimère with Vincent and Pascal Maurel of Clos Saint-Jean and oenologist Philippe Cambie, built mainly on Mourvèdre from the La Crau lieu-dit.
