Category: Rum

Hampden rum distilled in 1992 and bottled by Rum Nation in 2016 after 24 years, at 61.6%. It belongs to the bottler's Small Batch Rare Rums series and uses the HLCF mark, one of Hampden's higher-ester styles.

About This Rum

Twelve casks, numbered 1 to 12, were brought together for this release, giving 504 bottles. The rum was pot distilled at Hampden in Trelawny and bottled at full proof without sweetening. HLCF stands for Hampden Light Continental Flavoured, a mark from the middle of the distillery's ester range. Tasting Bros scored it 90, noting its oily texture and roundness.

Tasting Profile

  • Nose: Caramelised pecan and hazelnut, ripe pineapple, blood orange, banana, green olive and a mineral edge.
  • Palate: Oily and well rounded: candied pineapple and lemon, grapefruit, mango, cinnamon and burnt wood, with eucalyptus and brine.
  • Finish: Long, with brown sugar, peppermint, dried pineapple and marzipan.

Serving & Food

Pour it and walk away for half an hour; this rum rewards a long rest in the glass. Then add a few drops of water. It suits after-dinner service with marzipan, candied orange peel, or a board of aged Manchego.

How to Enjoy

A serious sipping rum for anyone who follows old Jamaican vintages, or a gift for a whisky drinker ready to try rum.

About the Distillery

Rum Nation is the rum label of Italian bottler Fabio Rossi. For years its bottles were known for a postage stamp from each rum's home country on the label, a nod to Rossi's other hobby as a stamp collector, and most were reduced to drinking strength.

The Small Batch Rare Rums range changed that. Launched in the mid-2010s, it bottles at or near cask strength with far more detail on the label, and the early Hampden and Demerara releases in it gave the brand a fresh start with enthusiasts.
