Prieuré Roch's Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Vieilles Vignes 2018 in magnum. It is made from the older vines of the domaine's Nuits holdings, in a hot vintage that gave dark, ripe fruit.

About This Wine

The domaine divides its Nuits-Saint-Georges premier cru fruit by vine age and berry size. The smallest, millerandé berries go to the Clos des Corvées top cuvée, and the produce of the old vines is bottled as this Vieilles Vignes. 2018 was an exceptionally hot season, second only to 2003, with a large crop, deep colour and alcohol often above 14%. In Nuits-Saint-Georges the challenge was to keep a rustic edge in check, and the domaine's whole-bunch approach gives the wine lift.

Tasting Profile

  • Nose: Blackberry, dark cherry and plum, with rose, earth and a whiff of spice from the stems.
  • Palate: Full and ripe, with concentrated fruit, sturdy but fine tannins and a savoury core.
  • Finish: Long, with dark fruit, spice and a mineral finish.

Serving & Food

Bring the magnum up from the cellar the day before so the sediment settles, give it an hour in a decanter and pour at 16 to 17°C. It will show well from about 2027 into the late 2030s. Serve with braised ox cheek, roast goose, or lamb chops with rosemary.

How to Enjoy

A robust premier cru to share at a larger table, and slow ageing in magnum.

About the Domaine

Nuits-Saint-Georges is where most of Prieuré Roch's vineyard land lies. Its core is the Clos des Corvées, a 5.21-hectare monopole in Prémeaux, with the steep Clos des Argillières alongside it since 2009.

The domaine picks by hand, sorts its old-vine fruit carefully and ferments everything as whole bunches in wooden vats. Farming has been organic from the start, and yields are kept deliberately low.
