Les Hautes Maizières is a village Vosne-Romanée from mid-slope, directly below the premier cru Les Suchots. This is Prieuré Roch's 2018 in magnum, from a hot year that gave dark, ripe Pinot Noir.
About This Wine
The domaine farms 0.62 hectares in the middle of the lieu-dit, with vines of around 40 years. Its position, just under a premier cru, puts it among the better-sited village land in Vosne, and the domaine describes the wine as classic Vosne with an unsettling finesse. 2018 opened after a wet winter that refilled the soils, then gave a hot, dry summer with one heat spike and a big crop. Colour was deep and alcohol generous, and in Vosne growers were able to get both power and elegance.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Black cherry, raspberry and violet, with warm spice and a touch of cocoa.
- Palate: Smooth and full for a village wine, with ripe fruit, fine tannins and enough acidity to stay fresh.
- Finish: Persistent and floral, with spice on the close.
Serving & Food
Stand upright a day before opening and decant for about 45 minutes. Pour at 16°C into generous Burgundy glasses. It is opening now and the magnum should run into the mid-2030s. Pair with roast duck with cherries, beef fillet with bone marrow, or claypot rice with Chinese sausage.

About the Domaine
The Vosne-Romanée appellation decree quotes the Abbé Courtépée, who in 1778 wrote that the village produced no common wine at all. Prieuré Roch has made Vosne the centre of its estate, with four wines from the village ranging from Les Clous at the foot of the slope to the premier cru Les Suchots.
The domaine now covers about twenty hectares from Gevrey-Chambertin to Savigny-lès-Beaune, led by Yannick Champ. It uses no synthetic products in the vineyard or the cellar.
