A magnum of Prieuré Roch's Vosne-Romanée Les Clous 2014, a village wine from a small parcel at the foot of the slope below the village. Now past ten years old, it is moving into its savoury, mature phase.
About This Wine
Les Clous was first the name of a wine rather than a place. The parcel sits where the hillside begins, at the foot of Vosne-Romanée, and straddles two lieux-dits, La Colombière and Le Pré de la Folie. Part of the plot, with vines over thirty years old, was later cleared and rested so the soil could recover. The domaine calls the wine fleshy and easy to drink. In 2014 the Côte de Nuits largely avoided the June hail that hit the Côte de Beaune, and sunny weather from mid-August brought the grapes in ripe.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Red cherry and cranberry, with dried rose, tea leaf and forest floor.
- Palate: Medium-bodied and supple, with lively acidity and tannins now soft and fine.
- Finish: Savoury and gently spicy, with a light earthy finish.
Serving & Food
Decant carefully off the sediment 30 minutes before serving at 15 to 16°C. It is ready now and should hold to around 2030 in magnum. Pair it with roast pork loin, wild mushroom tart, or a mature Comté.

About the Domaine
Domaine Prieuré Roch holds vineyards in six villages, but its roots are in Vosne-Romanée. It makes four wines from the village: Les Clous, Les Hautes Maizières, Les Suchots and the Clos Goillotte.
Its founder, Henry-Frédéric Roch, also co-directed the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti next door for over 25 years. His own domaine went its own way, with whole-bunch ferments, organic farming and wines bottled without filtration.
