Prieure Roch Le Clos Goillotte 2020 750mL

Le Clos Goillotte 2020 comes from Prieuré Roch's half-hectare monopole in the village of Vosne-Romanée. The early, dry 2020 season gave this normally delicate wine more colour and grip than usual.

About This Wine

The clos lies in the centre of Vosne-Romanée, in front of what was once the wine store of the Prince de Conti. It covers 0.55 hectares, and its vines average around 50 years old. The domaine describes the wine as one some call feminine, with endless curves and great delicacy. The 2020 harvest came very early; some growers started picking before they had in the heatwave year of 2003. The berries had thick skins and little juice, so extraction came easily, and cool nights preserved the tartaric acidity that gives the wines their energy.

Tasting Profile

• Nose: Wild cherry, red plum and rose, with a spicy, peppery lift from the stems.
• Palate: Silky yet deeper than usual, with concentrated red fruit, fine tannin and bright acidity.
• Finish: Poised, with floral spice and a mineral note that lingers.

Serving & Food

Wait until about 2027, then decant for 45 minutes and serve at 16°C in a Burgundy glass. It should drink well into the late 2030s. Good with roast guinea fowl, veal with morels, or Cantonese soy sauce chicken.

Cellaring for a few years, and a vertical alongside the 2019 to see the contrast between the two years.

About the Domaine

Domaine Prieuré Roch has its cellars in Prémeaux, at the southern end of Nuits-Saint-Georges, next to its largest vineyard, the Clos des Corvées. The buildings there have been rebuilt in recent years.

Farming has been organic since the start in 1988, and the domaine describes its wines as pure and sensual, the result of close attention in the vineyard and whole-bunch fermentation with no added sulphite. Its twenty or so hectares now reach from the Clos de Bèze in Gevrey-Chambertin south to Ladoix and Savigny-lès-Beaune.
