Port Ellen distillery on Islay was established in 1825, developed under John Ramsay from 1833-1892, and acquired by the Distillers Company (DCL) in 1925. It closed in 1930, was rebuilt in 1966-67, and operated through the 1970s before its 1983 closure; original production went into blended Scotch, while spirit distilled from 1983 onward matured into single malt. After closure, dwindling stocks became prized collector's items, with the distillery only reopening in 2024 under Diageo following a major rebuild — making pre-2024 closed-era casks like this one increasingly scarce.
