Old Forester Bourbon is the flagship straight bourbon of Louisville's Brown-Forman distillery and is recognised as America's first bottled bourbon, sold in sealed glass bottles since 1870. It is built around a higher-rye mashbill than most Kentucky bourbons.
From the Producer
Old Forester was introduced in 1870 by George Garvin Brown, a former pharmaceutical salesman who co-founded the company that became Brown-Forman; the Brown family still controls more than 70% of the voting shares of the publicly traded parent company. The bourbon was the first in the United States to be exclusively sold in sealed glass bottles, an innovation that guarded against adulteration and gave pharmacists and doctors confidence in the product. Brown-Forman received one of only six government licences to produce whiskey for medicinal purposes during Prohibition from 1920 to 1933. Old Forester is produced under the supervision of Master Distiller Chris Morris at the Brown-Forman distillery in Shively, Kentucky (adjacent to Louisville) using a mashbill of 72% corn, 18% rye and 10% malted barley, the same mashbill used for Woodford Reserve.
Tasting Profile
Old Forester's higher-rye mashbill delivers a richer rye-spice profile than most Kentucky bourbons: sweet corn, caramel and brown sugar on the entry, with rye spice and gentle pepper through the mid-palate and a warming, medium-length finish.
